Title: Maldives Banknote Discussion

I started passionately collecting Maldives since 2012 but first discovered the colourful Rufiyaa banknotes / bills when I first travelled to Maldives in 2009 - I instantly felt captivated and still have these original ones I received from 2009 in my wallet.

I have desired to collect them but started being serious 2012 onwards - it started by me wanting to collect the current set at the time and then one day while conducting research I discovered there were older currency from 1947 to 1980 that were much larger in size and completely different in appearance compared to the ones I saw 2009. I started with collecting all the known denominations and then all the issued years and then with earning more money I started buying Specimens and Proofs and rare items.

The 2010’s was an interesting decade for me collecting wise - in 2010 I was in my early days of collecting and nobody special and 10 years later I climbed the mountain and become one of the best Maldives collectors in the World and internationally known online. With a mixture of luck and dedication and quite a lot of money I have achieved a lot and have many items people collecting 30 years don’t have - I am proud of all I have achieved.

Why do I just collect Maldives? Well because I love the country and I am very passionate about collecting - plus I have got 100% of everything that was issued and I am a person that once I start something I want to get 100% - other countries people can never get 100% because there are 1000’s of things to collect and you need unlimited money and ridiculous luck to achieve - plus I don’t have a passion to collect any other countries so that’s why I just collect Maldives - I now I have all of them from 1947 to 2024

Historical Locations of Rufiyaa

1 Rufiyaa

A two‐storeyed building, which was used for different purposes over the years. At the time the bank notes were prepared the building was the Customs House. It later became a Post Office and was last used as the Office of the Prime Minister. To the left of the building is the main bastion of the town wall. The bastion was called the 'Bodu Koattey Buruzu'. There was a flagstaff on the Bodu Koattey which flew the State ensign if there was a foreign vessel in port. The bastion has since been torn down as part of the harbour redevelopment and the old Customs house has been demolished, now being the site of Republic Park.

10 Rufiyaa

The Veyodorhu Ganduvaru Mathige was a three‐storeyed house that was adjacent to the Sultan's Palace. Now demolished, the building was at one stage the Sifainge, or Defence Headquarters of the militia. The aspect of the illustration on the note is from the Aa-Koattey Buruzu (New Fort Bastion). To the left of the building is Medhumaa Gate, flanked by lamp- posts. To the left of the gate is the very low Kilege Buruzu (bastion) from which gun salutes were fired.

1947 1/2 Rufiyaa Consecutive Serial Numbers A761040 & A761041

The 1947 1/2 Rufiyaa is quite hard to obtain in high grade because rarely offered and expensive to purchase - but this is extra special because in 2013 when I purchased these it was possibly for the first time in maybe 65 Years since being printed by Bradbury Wilkinson these 2 notes were near each other

Owning 1 UNC 1/2 Rufiyaa is excellent / owning 2 UNC 1/2 Rufiyaa is amazing / owning 2 UNC 1/2 Rufiyaa that have consecutive serial numbers is unheard of (I must always highlight the fact they came from 2 different countries on 2 different continents)

Pick = The Pick number is a global system that was devised by Albert Pick to make identification of exact banknotes easier as shown in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. This system allows banknote collectors and dealers from all over the world to easily recognise exactly which note is being discussed, sold or traded. It is a universal system to understand a certain note that can cross any language barrier.

Ruth W. Hill (1898–1995) was an American numismatist who specialised in the collection of historical banknotes from around the world. Referred to as the "Grand Old Lady of Paper Money Collecting in North America" by many collectors, she was well regarded not only for her extensive numismatic holdings but also for her trailblazing efforts as a woman in a male dominated field. Hill was a collector of banknotes and one of the foremost researchers of paper currency, and was a highly active member of the numismatic community from the 1950s until her death in 1995. By the time of her death, her bank note collection was considered one of the rarest and most extensive in the world.

11 Years ago (2014) I missed out winning this at Auction and always kept hope that I would have the opportunity to once again one day to try to obtain it - well finally my patience paid off and I have it in my collection - I'm very glad

Thank you for sharing these beautiful notes.  Are these all from your personal collection?  I think you should publish your own book with all of those.

I noticed how beautiful the notes were when we visited the Maldives for our honeymoon.  I didn't get to keep very many as we were at a resort which didn't really use cash.  It was only during our brief time in Male that we got to see them in the wild.

1960 2 Rufiyaa (The 2nd 1960 2 Rufiyaa note issued)

Years ago when I purchased this the seller had no idea what it truly was so I was lucky to get it for a very cheap price compared to what it would have been purchased for if it had been known to be the 2nd Serial 1960 dated

The print run for the 1947 series was A000001 to A100000 and the 1960 series print run was C100001 to C850000 - so C100002 is the 2nd note issued in 1960 (after C100001)

In 2015 Maldives celebrates 50th Anniversary of Independence by releasing a Commemorative 5000 Rufiyaa - face value approx CAD$440

Also they released a special 10,000 Rufiyaa Revenue Stamp
I was lucky to be able to get Serial Number 1 - FYI this 10,000 Rufiyaa stamp has a face value of approx CAD$880

12 August 1947 the People’s Majlis (Council) passed Bill No. 2/66 (The Bill on Maldivian Bank Notes) which authorized the introduction of Maldivian bank notes and the withdrawal of Indian and Ceylonese bank notes. The Bill also authorized the formation of a committee to oversee matters concerning the Maldivian monetary system. The committee consisted of Government Ministers and Members of the People's Majlis"

1960 Stamp and 1947 Banknote
A two‐storeyed building, which was used for different purposes over the years. At the time the bank notes were prepared the building was the Customs House. It later became a Post Office and was last used as the Office of the Prime Minister. To the left of the building is the main bastion of the town wall. The bastion was called the ‘Bodu Koattey Buruzu’. There was a flagstaff on the Bodu Koattey which flew the State ensign if there was a foreign vessel in port. The bastion has since been torn down as part of the harbour redevelopment and the old Customs house has been demolished, now being the site of Republic Park.

1960 Stamp and 1947 Banknote
The Veyodorhu Ganduvaru Mathige was a three‐storeyed house that was adjacent to the Sultan’s Palace. Now demolished, the building was at one stage the Sifainge, or Defence Headquarters of the militia. The aspect of the illustration on the note is from the Aa-Koattey Buruzu (New Fort Bastion). To the left of the building is Medhumaa Gate, flanked by lamp- posts. To the left of the gate is the very low Kilege Buruzu (bastion) from which gun salutes were fired.

Maldives Unissued Photographic Printer Proofs

Maldives have had 3 major design changes with their banknotes in the last 70 years - 1948 when they first issued banknotes / 1983 when they redesigned the banknotes to be smaller in size / 2015 when they introduced polymer banknotes.

In the 1960's and 1970's the British Printers Bradbury Wilkinson & Co played around with some test designs that were never adopted and subsequently photographs were taken of these proposals for archival / posterity purposes and the originals destroyed.

These photographs along with other photographs of unissued / proposed designs for other countries were stuck into an album / book. Somehow over time this album / book ended up in a rubbish skip and was somehow saved from destruction.

These are truly one off in the World and although crudely cut / rough looking have been certified by Spink UK to be true and genuine - an interesting insight into what may have been...

I was happy to find this / buy this Maldives error banknote but it is fake apparently (a polymer banknote expert claims the seller used acetone to remove the ink on the back of the banknote)

Oh well something different for my Maldives Collection I suppose 😬🤷‍♂️

Yes, that note is a fake error.  It is very easy to remove ink off polymer notes.

I am just curious. Do you also collect replacement notes?
I just saw a dealer offering 2022-dated 50 rufiyaa replacement notes and 2020-dated 20 rufiyaa replacement notes (both with prefix ''Z'').

To my knowledge I am the only person in the World to have 2 consecutive serial numbered 1/2 Rufiyaa and possibly 3 of 5 being extremely rare to achieve
