Good money and your central bank

The future of bank notes

Now let’s get more concrete, starting with the simplest form of money—cash.

Cash has undeniable benefits. It’s simple, widely accepted, inexpensive to use and reliable. It works during power failures and internet outages and is not vulnerable to cyber attack. About 80% of Canadians—perhaps surprisingly, both old and young—and 96% of small- and medium-sized businesses use cash.

While the use of cash for daily transactions has declined, cash remains important to many Canadians. It accounts for one in five transactions at the point of sale, and the demand for cash continues to grow with the economy.

To be good money, the bank notes we issue have to be easy to authenticate and hard to counterfeit. We issued our first series of notes in 1935, shortly after the Bank was founded. That first series of notes had raised ink and small green dots scattered in the paper, which made the notes hard to counterfeit at the time. But threats have evolved.

Our newest bank note will be issued in early 2027. The new vertical $20 will showcase an innovation in anti-counterfeiting security. We’ve used 3-D features before, and we’ve used features that shift when the note is moved. Our $20 note will combine these two technologies for the first time. I wish I could tell you more, but you’ll have to wait for the unveiling next year.

What I can tell you is that the new $20 note will feature King Charles III on the front and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial on the back. A new $5 note will follow soon after, picturing Terry Fox. And work has begun to develop larger denominations—the $50 and the $100—to build on the security features of this new series of notes.

To be good money, cash also needs to be accessible. And I want to assure you that even as other forms of payment are growing faster than cash, we are committed to ensuring Canadians continue to have access to cash.

Curious as I haven't bought a Charlton guide since 2021 as I agree the changes are so minimal I don't really see the point. When did the 2025 guide come out / when do we expect the 2026 to come out? Thinking I'm due for a copy but don't want to buy the 25' if 26' is out soon. Thanks!

A quick update; we can add a couple more Osborne $20s to the list from the bundle of 100 notes:

A/E 0433012, Legacy GUnc 65 PPQ, ebay seller.
A/E 0433094, Uncirculated, auction December 26th from Kitchener.

The count is 9 notes so far, without much searching.

-Yes, I wonder if they ran out of space (by squeezing in Rogers-Macklem INT-INY) which wasn't really necessary since we don't know ho far Rogers Macklem will go.

The one typo that stood out for me was on the 10th row (from the top) on the same page (253):
Wilkins-Macklem IND-INK
What?
They have the 2 HBG change-overs correct; the 2 HCM change-overs correct & then that (& then even the INK change-overs correct).  I did notice a couple other typos too but I have to go over it again as it was in December when I picked up mine & did not circle the things I saw that didn't make sense.

Hey WTTW,

Ya, if they just delete that '-INK' part and add the Rogers INSs it would be correct.  The SNDB is showing INY, INZ and IOA and IOB being issued now.  I have one branch that seems to get new notes of every $5 prefix and lets see if I will be one of the first to enter IOC for fun.

Every year I say to myself I'm not going to buy a Charlton, and then l do and so little changes, I say why did I do it.  :D

Cheers, B

Dec 14th:
Weekend coin hunt.

I got some coin rolls from my local bank on Friday.
I was pleased to find a fair share of US coins, a nice 1969 nickel, a 2000p nickel a couple of foreign coins and…
a silver dime from 1958!

At the Bank machine, I pulled out some $10s and to my surprise, six of them were old Macdonald $10s!

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the reply. I've contacted an auctioneer and he said that he sold only one bundle, but it was with the original package. He suggested me to grade a few bills to see of I could find gem unc. That would probably be easier to sell but more work

Hello!
I'm interested in some of your banknotes!

Hi Norum,  Welcome back again!

Yes, the BSW series is very interesting, and no one knows how many more surprises await us in the future. And there will be surprises not only in this series, but in the others mentioned above as well.

I can understand the desirability of a BSW note due to how well known the 'mystery' of where they are all is amongst collectors.  Also it's getting less and less likely that one will be found in the wild as the $20 notes starting with B are getting so worn that they are being recalled by the distribution centers now.  But that isn't to say that perhaps someone has one stashed somewhere and puts it back into circulation at anytime in the future.  It is bizarre when you come across a note issued eons ago that is still in great shape, UNC even. but it does happen.

Cheers, B
