June 20th finds:

The right place at the right time…

I went to one of my “dump banks” to drop off all of the rolls of coins I just searched.  While I was waiting in line, I noticed an older lady holding some RCM boxes.

I asked her what they were and she said that they were silver coins that she bought in 2014 that she was going to cash in for face value.

I asked her if she was willing to sell them to me rather than wait in line and she agreed.  Her husband had some “$20 for $20” silver coins that he also intended to cash in.

I immediately went to the bank machine and took out money to buy the coins.

Time will tell if this was a wise decision…

Enjoy!

June 28th finds:

I managed to get some nickel dollars from the bank on Saturday.  I figured that I’d go and get some rolled coins too.

I’m glad I did, because out of $100 in quarters and $150 in dimes, I got:

$1.25in US coins
An RCMP quarter
An elusive 1970 dated dime
And best of all, a silver dime dated 1951!

Enjoy!

July 7th major update:

I have had a busy week…and I still managed to visit a few banks.

On the weekend, I got some birds notes and one journey $20 from a bank located east of Toronto.

Back home, I went to my favourite local banks and got a bunch of coins.

The first load of coins yielded a bunch of US coins, and more importantly, two 1968 silvers

The second load of coins also gave up a bunch of US coins plus another nice 1970 dated dime.
I also found a couple of foreign coins as well as two curiously worn dimes dated 1968 and 1980, worn almost flat.  It’s strange to find two such worn coins; what could have caused this?

Enjoy!

July 8th finds:  4 banks, 4 scores!

I visited three banks in my travels today.  Each of them gave me something neat!

Bank #1:  I asked for $200 in dime and quarter rolls.  I think there might be silver in at least one roll…
Bank #2:  I received four bags of pennies.  I asked for and received a box of dimes, but when it came out, it was a full RCM box of 2025 dated coins.  ☹️
Bank #3:  I received 3 rolls of pennies and while I was there, I bought $100 in dime rolls.
Bank #4:  I got to pick through the mutilated notes and I pulled a couple of nicer birds $100s, $10s and a $1 and $2 note as well.

*I only visited bank #4 because I stopped in to get rid of the RCM box of dimes from bank #2.*

Updates on the coin hunt will follow.

Enjoy!

July 9th coin hunting update:

Silver score!

After searching the coin rolls I brought home yesterday, I was thrilled to find five silver coins!
1953, 1967, and 1968 silver Canadian dimes,
And, best of all, a 1949 US dime and a 1931s Mercury dime!

Enjoy!

July 9th finds:

Ask and ye shall receive…

I am often asked how I am able to score vintage banknotes and coins from the bank.  The simple answer is that I ask!

Today, I visited a bank that I haven’t been to in awhile and the teller gave me a journey $50 and a birds $2, but this birds note is a replacement EBX prefix note!  Sadly, it’s in poor condition…

Enjoy!

July 10th:
Main Branch Madness!

I visited two main branches of the banks today and I managed to get a bunch of notes.
Nothing too special, but there is a nice run of journey $10s and $100s and a couple of birds $2s.

Enjoy!

July 15th finds:
Paper money…and pennies.

Today, I visited 2 banks.  The first bank gave me a paper $20 and $5.  Neither one of these notes are collectable but I took them anyway to keep the door open with the teller.  I also managed to rescue some MacDonald $10s which are subject to an active cull.  I will spend these notes to prolong their lives s bit.   ;)

The second bank gave me 59 rolls of pennies.  I decided to get some rolled coins as well and I managed to get quarters and dimes.

There was a bunch of quarters that were machine rolled, but I was surprised to pull some US quarters out of these rolls.

Overall, the quarters were unremarkable; I even got ripped off by receiving a laundry token and a coin from the United Arab Emitates.  ☹️

I did not fare much better with the dimes, other than $3.00 in US coins a UK 5 pence coin an Australian coin and a coin from the Cayman Islands, there was no silver to be found.

The reality of coin hunting is that you rarely find silver.  I’ve just been extremely lucky in 2025.

Enjoy!

July 22nd major update:

I’ve found a lot of stuff this week…Here goes!

On Thursday last week, I asked for and received $270 worth of dimes and $80 in quarters.  Out of these rolls came some keepers, most notably one silver dime dated 1960.  I also got $1 worth of US dimes.

On Friday, I went to one of my banks and they gave me three journey $20s a journey $100 a few rolls of pennies and some loose pennies plus one US nickel for free.  🤣

On Saturday, I went to another bank and asked for dimes and quarters.  I got a few rolls of each and to my surprise, there was one 1968 silver dime in there!

Today, I went to my local bank to retrieve some paper notes that the manager promised to save for me.  This pickup took several days to come to fruition because the staff kept forgetting to retrieve the mutilated notes from the safe which has a time delay.  Anyway, persistence paid off…I was able to quickly leaf through the mutilated pile and I managed to pull out a few multicolour notes, and some birds and journey notes as well.

The highlights of these notes are definitely the crisp 1954 $10 as well as the crisp multicolour $10.

There is so much out there to find…I am only saving a fraction of all of the old paper money that is turned in each and every day by the public.

Enjoy!

Today, I bought these two consecutive 1979 $20s with a cutting error.
