Dec 14th:
Weekend coin hunt.

I got some coin rolls from my local bank on Friday.
I was pleased to find a fair share of US coins, a nice 1969 nickel, a 2000p nickel a couple of foreign coins and…
a silver dime from 1958!

At the Bank machine, I pulled out some $10s and to my surprise, six of them were old Macdonald $10s!

December 18th finds:

Since my last silver find, I have gone through $700 worth of coins.  Today, I picked up a box of dimes from my local bank, hoping for more silver, since this bank has always paid out.

Unfortunately, all I got was $4.30 in US dimes and one UK five pence coin.

The reality of hunting rolls is that 90% of the time, you find nothing.  That’s why I haven’t bothered to post photos of all of the rolls I got in the last few days.

I wonder if different chartered banks exchange coins with each other.  I have a “dump” bank branch of RBC and I pick up a lot of coin from a TD bank close by.

I used to use a Sharpie to put a dot at the top of each roll I returned.
Lately, I've been searching hundreds of rolls per week and I've become lazy and stopped doing it.  Perhaps I should start marking my searched rolls again.

December 30th:
Main Branch Madness!

I went to the main branches of all of the big banks yesterday.  There wasn't much to be found, but I did manage to score a few bills!

The teller at Scotiabank gave me six journey $5s.

When I went to RBC, the teller was reluctant to give me anything, saying that “he’s not supposed to”.  After some convincing, he relented and gave me two ratty old $1s and a single journey $20.  The teller was new—of course, the teller I was used to dealing with got promoted!

I have a feeling there was more old money in the cage, but the teller clearly wasn’t comfortable giving it out. With further work, I will get him to understand this hobby.  😀

I decided to stop at one more bank on my way home and the teller at this bank was more than willing to give me a huge pile of notes!

Interestingly, there were three polymer $10s in the mutilated pile— one old Macdonald $10 and two 2017 commemorative notes that had nothing wrong with them.  There is certainly an active effort to withdraw these notes, but I rescued them so I can spend them and prolong their lives.

I took the opportunity to buy some coin rolls and unfortunately, there was no silver.

I did find a few foreign coins including a 10 cent piece from Aruba and a Chinese coin.  There was also a fair amount of US coin in this batch.

New Year’s Eve coin hunt!

I went to a couple of banks today and got some coin rolls.

Hopefully, 2025 will end with me finding silver!

I’m encouraged by these two rolls…the wrapper looks ancient!

January 2nd part 1:
Coin hunt update.

Well, my last coin hunt of 2025 turned out to be a bust.  No silver, no US coins and no commemoratives.
I was disappointed to find nothing but modern coins in those two vintage dime wrappers…I hate to think that they contained silver coins that someone cashed in and then re-used the rolling papers…

But here are the silver coins I found in 2025.

January 2nd part 2:

I went to my local bank today and the teller gave me $270 in rolled coins.

2026 looks to be starting on a positive note because along with a fair share of US dimes, I was able to get a 2017 quarter and a 1953 nickel.  Unfortunately, it looks like the near leaf, shoulder fold variety, which is the common one.

Even better, the dime rolls yielded a 1967 silver dime!

Very nice silver finds over the year, looks like at least $400 given todays value of silver congrats!

January 7th:
Free coins are always nice!

I visited two banks today.  Neither of them had any paper money, but I managed to come away with some treasures.

The first bank had three rolls of pennies.  I also bought some customer wrapped coins while I was there.

The second bank offered me some customer wrapped coins and because it was near the end of the day, the tellers started chatting with me about why I do what I do.

After some friendly banter, the manager said that he had a gift for me.  He reached into the change tray and gave me a handful of miscellaneous coins, free of charge!

Among the finds are two 50 Euro cent pieces; one from Belgium and the other from Spain.

There were some Canadian coins and some US…most notably, three US pennies, one of which is dated 2025!

I know that there are millions of 2025 US pennies, but it’s still cool to find one here in Canada.

I hope there are more treasures in the rolls…

Jan 9th coin hunt update:

I didn’t have any earth shattering finds in the coin rolls I brought home the other day.  Other than a healthy share of US coins, I was happy to find a 1941 nickel and a few 1990 nickels as well.

I wonder if the 2000 freedom quarter is a proof or a regular strike?  It has a frosted maple leaf.

Jan 9th finds:

I went to one of my banks today and I was able to rescue a few paper notes.  Nothing special, but I did find it odd to find two consecutive but circulated (and one of them mutilated) $1 notes.  Maybe they were wallet partners for a very long time and then finally deposited?  As longcas both serial numbers are legible, the owner would have received full face value for 3/4 of a note.

Of course, the AOH $5 is not an insert note… 🤣
I also asked for some coin rolls because, well, why not?  😀

Jan 9th coin hunt update:

I searched through last night’s coin pickups and I was rewarded!

Aside from a good chunk of US change, I got a bunch if BU condition 2017 quarters and one colour version…I have only found one colour 2017 previously so this is a cool find.

Foreign finds were plentiful with one 5p coin from the UK, one 5c coin from the Cayman Islands and two Chinese Yuan.  Unfortunately, when I find foreign coins other than the US or Europe, they are worthless or of very little value.
The Chinese Yuan is worth 20 Canadian cents each and I found them in quarter rolls.  ☹️

But the loss incurred from the foreign coins was immediately offset by one silver dime from 1947 and a silver quarter from 1968!. Additionally, there were two nickels from 1963 in excellent lustrous condition and a 12 sided nickel from 1962.

Jan 10th finds:

After striking silver yesterday, I went back to the same bank and bought as many rolls as they were willing to sell to me.  Let’s hope that there are more treasures in the rolls because I suspect that this is a collection dump, especially since I found paper bills at this branch yesterday.

It just so happens that this branch has a competitor bank (Scotiabank) right next door, so I popped in.  Usually Scotiabank gives me nothing, but today, the teller offered me two big nickel dollars and a nickel 50 cent piece!  Pressing my luck, I bought some coin rolls from Scotiabank. 

Which bank will win in terms of finds?
