I would like to get your opinions on valuing damaged notes. I realize most damaged notes will not carry any value unless rare and it would also depend on the severity of the damage. Would you cut the value in half? Down grade it by one full grade?

I recently added this 1935 Large Seal $20 to my collection. It's graded PMG VF-20 with a corner missing. I paid 40% of the price given in Charlton which to me was a fair price. What are your opinions?

Usually when a piece of the note is missing and/or has been repaired by tape it gets downgraded to a G to VG. On the other hand the rest of your note is in very nice shape especially for a 1935 series! As for what you paid, its the large seal (the scarcer of the two) so 40% means you probably paid around $1,400. I think its a fair price.

Thanks for the reply, JB! Yes, I paid $1,450 all in. I guess what it all comes down to what the buyer and seller agree to. For me it was about finding a note I was happy with and filling the hole in my collection without breaking the bank.
