July 26th finds:

My local bank didn’t have many circulated coin rolls today.  All they could offer to me was $50 in dimes.

To my surprise, this batch was loaded with $2.20 in US dimes and best of all, one 50% silver dime, dated 1968!

You can search through hundreds of dollars worth of coins before finding any silver, but today, luck was on my side.

July 31st finds:
Some pennies…And silver!

One of my banks gave me five rolls of pennies and a journey $100 note.  While there, I asked for rolled coins and received $75 in dimes and quarters.

I was pleased to find four US dimes, a coin from Singapore, and a colour 2021 dime.  Best of all, there was one silver dime dated 1961 in the rolls!

Unfortunately, the quarter rolls were duds.  No silver or anything special.

Silver coins are still out there!

Aug 19th update:

After almost three weeks without finding any paper notes, I resorted to hunting coin rolls.  In this time, I was only able to find one silver dime, dated 1956. Out of almost $1500 worth of searched dimes, quarters and nickels, my finds in August are rather slim.  Aside from a decent amount of US coin, there really isn’t much in the rolls I have been picking through, with quarters being almost devoid of anything interesting.
The only other find worth mentioning is a 2000p nickel.

Oh well, as they say, you’ll never find anything if you don’t look!

August 19th:  Double Main Branch Madness!

Yesterday, I went to the main branches of two big banks.
At the first bank, I asked for old bills and coins.  They had no bills, but the teller offered me some US coins which I gladly accepted.  Interestingly, the teller dumped the coins onto the desk and counted the US dimes as pennies!.

I told the teller that he made a mistake, but he said that they “can’t resell small US coins so we just count them as pennies”.  The teller also gave me five US quarters that he had in the till, but he said that he had to charge me 25 cents for each one.  Of course, that was a no-brainer, so I took the quarters too.

Not bad for $1.75 spent, eh?

The second main branch did have some paper notes.  I managed to pick out some multicolour $50s some birds $5 and $10 and $50 notes, some 1979 $20s and some ratty old birds $2s.

September 4th update:

August was a pretty dry month in terms of both paper money and silver finds.
Last week, things started to turn around.
Out of $200 in dimes and $50 in quarters, I found:

A fair share of US coins
One 5p coin from the UK
Some commemoratives
And one silver dime dated 1949.

Finally back on the silver!

September 4th finds:

Finally, some paper money!

One of my banks allowed me to pick through the cull pile and I picked out a few paper notes.  There’s nothing really special, but the birds $100 is a hidden BPN AJZ prefix note.

While I was at it, I picked up a few rolls of coins.  Again, nothing huge came out of these rolls, but I did find a colour maple leaf flag quarter which was nice.

The teller also gave me 13 rolls of pennies.

September 12th finds:

I managed to go through $600 worth of quarters and dimes this week.
There was a fair bit of US coinage, commemoratives and foreign junk “finds” but this time, five of the dime rolls contained a penny, leaving me short.

I guess the US coins made up for the shortfall, but there are so many people who resort to scams like this to make a few bucks by ripping off the banks.

People who purposely make short rolls have made coin hunting into more of a hassle as more and more banks insist on opening every single roll and counting every single coin.  (I’m looking at you, Scotiabank…)

But all was made better when I found a silver 1967 dime!

Sept 13th finds:

More coin rolls an a couple of interesting bills.

I went to two banks today.  The first bank gave me 4 rolls of circulated quarters and four rolls of dimes.
The second bank gave me ten rolls of quarters, but only one of them is circulated, with the rest being brand new 2024 coins.  I’m not going to bother searching the new rolls…

On the bright side, the ten rolls of dimes that came from bank #2 are circulated coins.

I also went to the bank machine to withdraw some cash and out came two interesting $20 notes;  an FWW prefix $20, unfortunately not the commemorative issue, and a birthday note, BSE 1959913. September 13th 1959!  What are the odds of finding a birthday note on the actual day?

Sept 13th coin hunting update:

Well, this hunt was a mixed bag; I decided to open one of the white machine wrapped rolls of quarters and I confirmed that they were all 2024s.

There was one hand wrapped quarter roll that had a nickel inserted in the middle, leaving me short by 20 cents.☹️
Thankfully, the loss was offset by 95 US cents and one silver dime from 1951!

I also managed to find two 1991, a 1968 nickel alloy and a 1969 small date in the dime rolls.

The frequency of short rolls seems to be increasing for me but I am not discouraged…yet because there’s always a chance to find silver.

Sept 15th finds:
Slim pickings…

I stopped by my local bank today.  They had no paper bills but I managed to obtain $75 in rolled coins which is unusual for this branch because they usually supply as much as I ask for.

There wasn’t much in these rolls.  Aside from $1 worth of US coins, the only other find was a UK 10 pence coin from 1992.

Ah well…I’ll keep trying.  Eventually, something will pop up.

September 25th summary part 1:

This week was a good one for me in terms of banknote finds and coin roll hunting.

I picked through many rolls of coins and I was lucky enough to find a fair number of keepers including a whole bunch of mint state 1971 nickels.
The rolls of loonies contained nothing of interest.  I usually turn down loonies and toonies, but the teller I dealt with went out of her way to separate the circulated coins so I just accepted them.  The teller said that she had some “garbage coins” and there was a silver 1960 quarter with cool toning in the reject tray.

I managed to get some notes, including a decent 1954 $2 note and a birds AUK prefix $2, signed by Thiessen and Crow.

I picked up $150 in dimes and quarters today.  In them, I found $2.45 in US change, a few 1968 nickel alloy dimes and best of all, a silver dime dated 1965!

September 29th finds:

Free money is always nice…

Today, I stopped by two banks.  At the first bank, I dropped off my searched coin rolls from the last hunt.  While I was there, I asked for any mutilated or foreign coins that they might have in their junk drawer.  The teller surprised me by giving me 69 pennies free of charge!

At the second bank, I picked up $100 in dime rolls because they had no paper money.
Nothing much came out of this lot, except for $1.10 in US coins, a coin from Barbados and a 1991 Canadian dime along with two 1968s made of nickel.
